Installing Netbeans 6.8 on openSUSE 11.2

with 3 comments

Download Netbeans from this link

http://netbeans.org/downloads/start.html?platform=linux&lang=en&option=all&version=6.8

Once the download is over compute its MD5 checksum with the following command and confirm with the one found in the url above

md5sum netbeans-6.8-ml-linux.sh

If the checksum matches proceed. Otherwise the download could be corrupted and therefore the installation may fail.

Install netbeans using the following command

kdesu sh netbeans-6.8-ml-linux.sh

Note:-
If the setup is run with sudo instead of kdesu, the installation may fail for the X11 DISPLAY environment variable not set. Therefore, as mentioned here, run with kdesu to avoid this problem.

The Netbeans installer opens. Follow the on screen instructions to complete the installation.

  1. I found that for some reason my setup does not allow this. I get “Command ‘sh ‘netbeans-6.8-ml-linux.sh’ not found”. Don’t know what’s going on here. Anyway I instead had to do this:

    chmod +x netbeans-6.8-ml-linux.sh
    kdesu /home/mjl/Download/netbeans-6.8-ml-linux.sh

Another small note: if you installed netbeans using YAST/zypper (which still installs 6.5 from the repos), remove it first:

    kdesu zypper remove netbeans.

In fact I’d probably recommend to install with YAST first, then remove and install using above, because doing this also installs useful dependency packages like openjdk-devel, junit, jython, jakarta-commons and so on, which you’ll probably want 🙂
